Frequently asked questions
What is the NATO phonetic alphabet?
It is a spelling alphabet where each letter has a code word: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu. It was created by NATO so letters are easy to hear correctly over radio and phone.
Why use the NATO phonetic alphabet?
Letters like B, D, and E sound alike on the phone. Saying "Bravo", "Delta", "Echo" removes confusion when spelling names, order numbers, or passwords.
Is this translator free?
Yes, it is free with no signup and no limits.
Does it work with numbers?
Yes. Digits are converted to Zero, One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Niner. Note that NATO says "Niner" instead of "Nine" to avoid confusion with the German word for no.
How are spaces handled?
Spaces are skipped. In one-word-per-line mode, a blank line marks the space between words.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The translation runs in your browser with JavaScript, so your text never leaves your device.
